Well, Halloween is originally a Celtic paganism holiday that was celebrated on November 1; the Celtic's saw that day as the being of the new year and they believed that it was when Demons and Ghost of those that had passed on was able to cross back over to their world. In order to keep them away they light fires, and wore masks to trick and scare off any evil spirits. It's very similar to The Day of The Dead that is celebrated by the Spanish.
