    Languages can definitely change and they can diverge.

    For example, Latin "split up" into the modern Romance languages: Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, Galician, etc.

    This is less known, but languages can also converge: those languages are called creole. Some people argue that English is also similar to a creole: a mix of Germanic and French.
