How did the fear of losing the space race affect education in the United States?

They took some of the funds for schools to put to the space station because

there were some threats from the Soviet Union (USSR) and some believe they didn't take out enough so they took more tax payer money out of school funds.

The U. S. government sponsored new science and engineering programs in

schools.
