What is one reason that the middle ages are sometimes referred to as the dark ages?

a. for the fertile soil that supported agriculture

    I'd more likely to say that no of the given above fit to be the right. As there's not much information about middle ages. And that's why middle ages are associated with Dark Ages. But may be it's connected with religion, so the closest for me is b. for the persecution suffered by certain Christian groups as well as Jews and Muslims
