Farmers in ancient Egypt were usually small land owners who paid little or no taxes to the government. Although many members of the ruling class were also farmers, the occupation did not consist just of the highest class of people. Many members of the middle class also owned small areas of land and made a living off of the profits from their agricultural sales. While peasants did not own land, many of them made their living working as serfs on other people's land. These men and women belonged to the land that they worked, and while they weren't slaves, they were left with no other alternative.
