    Cosroes I or Khosrau I was one of the most important kings of the Sassanid dynasty of the Second Persian Empire. He was the architect of the expansion of the empire to the Indus and the Red Sea, and faced the Byzantine Empire for control of the Middle East. His attacks were so strong that the Byzantine emperor Justinian had to buy peace by paying a tribute of 11,000 pieces of gold. He reorganized the administration of the empire, which he divided into four districts. He was a tolerant king, and accepted the last pagan philosophers of Athens when the emperor closed the Academy. He reigned for almost half a century, from 531 to 579, when Hormizd IV succeeded him.
