He wanted to reform Egypt's religion and turn it from a polytheistic religion into a sort of a single god religion based on Aten who was one of the aspects of Ra. Many disliked this and after his death he was removed from the list of kings and his monuments were destroyed because of this, as well as art devoted to him or anything similar.
