The main purpose of the Magna Carta was to attempt to put restrictions on the powers of a King or monarch. It was made so that the king may not abuse his power. The Magna Carta was the first stepping stone that led to constitutional monarchies and the monarchy that the UK has today.

Magna Carta was an attempt by the barons to stop a king - in this case John - abusing his power with the people of England suffering
