What did King Louis IX of France proclaim in 1598?

He signed the Edict of Nantes, which granted religious freedom to a group of people known as the Huguenauts, who were Protestants. This group was considered contrary to the majority population of France at the time, who were Catholics. The idea of religious tolerance and freedom give to a group at the time is a very revolutionary idea. In other countries most groups would be persecuted until they left or were killed.

In the year 1598, king Henry IV, and not Louis IX, delivered the edict of Nantes. This edict is important because it granted the Huguenots, french protestants, rights they didn't have before. France was essentially a Catholic country and did not grant rights to the Huguenots. This edict changed things. It gave them civil rights and stopped the religious wars that had been going on for years.
