When Soviets launched the satellite sputnik the Americans immediately suffered one loss in the space race to the Russians. Becuase of the American defeat the American government blamed American education and a lot of funding was put into math and science to try to make up for the losses and continue the space race. also many Americans were terrified of sputnik because they were worried of weapons like inter continental ballistic missiles that could destroy America.
