Madison Washington took the Creole to the British Bahamas to gain his and his shipmates' freedom. Madison Washington, a slave cook himself, started a revolt while on board the ship Creole that carried 134 slaves meant to be sold in New Orleans. When they arrived to the British Bahamas, they were granted freedom after winning their case under British laws.
