The three Estates were the following: 1st - Clergy (People associated with the church which, by the way, controlled 10% of land and had the smallest membership of the estates) 2nd - Nobility (generally wealthy aristocrats who held some official titles) and 3rd - The Common People, comprised of people from both the middle class (Bourgeoisie aka bankers, merchants, etc.) and peasants. Occupation was clearly the main factor so, if I were to pick one, it would be that. At the same wealth clearly did affect how one might get a title that would put them in the nobility. A problem with the Estates system was that social classes were "crammed" into the 3rd Estate, so there was a very unequal representation within government.
