The correct answer is

they were kicked out and given a base at Macao

It might seem surreal but it actually belonged to Portugal up until 1999 when it was officially returned back to China. At first it was leased to Portugal for trading but it eventually became a colony and remained as such until 1999. It is now an autonomous region.
