The proclamation was as result of the rebellion or mutiny by the military soldiers in Meerut in 1857. It was regarded as the first war towards India gaining her independence from the British rule.

It must be noted that the Indian armies revolt spread across the country as result of how the British have be marginalizing and cheating the Indians in all ways. The revolt lead to the end of the East India company which made the British to have no other choice than to change most of the previous policies it has been using to rule India so as to appease Indians.
