How did slavery affect the growth of the South's economy?

    Slavery supporters argued that the abrupt end of the slave trade would have had a profound and murderous economic effect in the South, where dependence on slave labor was the cornerstone of their trade. The cotton industry is likely to crash. The crop of tobacco will dry out in the fields. Rice will not be competitive any more.
