    The answer is Grant. Lincoln was desperate to find a general capable of taking the fight to the Confederacy. When he saw Grant’s accomplishments in Donaldson and Vicksburg, he decided to make him commander of the Union army. He fought Lee every step of the way and with Sherman’s support, led the Union to victory.
