The Muslim troops were under the leadership of Salah ad-Din (Saladin) an Ayyubid sultan. They had murdered and enslaved many Crusaders which made the Muslims a great military power in Jersualem, the Holy Land. They had also captured other cities which sparked what was then known as the ‘Third Crusade’.
