Glasnost is a policy implemented by Mikhail Gorbachev in which the Soviet government would be more transparent with information and news. Before this policy was implemented, the Soviet government had significant control over the news stories and news networks. Essentially, the government could dictate what news the citizens would hear.

With the new policy of glasnost, there was more opportunities for freedom of speech and freedom of press without worrying about getting in trouble with the government.
