Why was the continental congress leery of our country becoming a democracy

Great Britain would be losing a great amount of money if the US becomes an independent country. The US is Great Britain's source of raw materials and commodities. Many products are made in the US and are then exported to England. An example would be tobacco and tea. They will lose control of all the plantations that they have created in the US.
