Colony settled by the Dutch, that encroached on English land claims during the English Civil War and was forced to surrender to the English. The colony and the city were renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York.

The name of the colony settled by the Dutch in the 17th century was New Amsterdam. This colony was renamed New York in September 1664 in honor of the Duke of York. The Dutch and the English signed the Treaty of Breda after the end of the war in 1667 by which the Dutch agreed to give up the New Amsterdam colony and the English agreed to give up Surinam.
