Which city was the capital of the western Roman Empire

    The Western Roman Empire was created in the year 286, when the Emperor Diocletian tried to bring stability back into government by dividing the Roman empire into sections. The capital city had been Rome, but after the division the capital city became Mediolanum, which is now the city of Milan.
