A writ of habeas corpus is an important safeguard when it comes to protecting people from wrongful imprisonment.

A writ of habeas corpus can be asked by a prisoner or his lawyer if a person claims to be wrongfully imprisoned and with it they actually request to have a trial by jury. A trial by jury is an right guaranteed by the Constitution and thus every citizen is entitled to one. Therefore, this writ safeguards individual freedom by protecting citizens from wrongful arrests and imprisonments.
