the Society of Jesus, much like other religious orders, allowed the Catholic Church to focus on matters outside the traditional role of priests serving communities.

The Jesuits became the earliest missionaries for the Church, going into remote areas around the world and forcing native populations to convert. The Jesuits also founded Universities and became known for their education systems.

By having a self-funding external order responsible for new areas in the Church, the Church was able to expand outside the villages of Europe.
