Wounded knee is located on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota. It was the site of major conflicts between the North American Indians and the US Govt representative. A massacre in 1890 killed 150 Native Americans. The wounded knee was occupied by American Indian Movement for 71 days to protest conditions on the reservation. The conflict between the Indians and the American police started when the police killed the Sitting bull (Sioux chief). A brutal massacre was followed later in which 150 Indians were killed. The conflict was originally referred to as a battle. Some historians claim that the 7th cavalry deliberately took revenge for its defeat at Little Bighorn 1876.
