Why were west africans preferred over the native people of the americas for enslaved labor?

One was that as per British law, they were subjects of sovereign countries with whom the states were exchanging. Another, as others have called attention to, is that it was far simpler for them to flee back to their tribe than it was for subjugated Africans, who had no place to go.
