Governor Berkeley considered Bacon’s grievances and actions as a direct challenge to his authority. In the opinion of the governor, Bacon was guilty of treason. Berkeley ordered the matters to be investigated and initiated peace talks between the government and the rebels which leads to the murder of numerous tribal chiefs and people. Berkeley offered all means to pardon Bacon but he would not listen to him. This resulted to a war.
