    The correct answer is D.

New Jersey v. T. L. O was a decision by the Supreme Court addressing the constitutionality of a search of a public high school student for contraband after she was caught smoking. A teacher caught two girls smoking in the schools's bathroom and and after T. L. O. denied the accusation, she was forced to open her bag for a search. Marijuana was found in the girl's purse together with samples of other drugs. T. L. O was charged but argued in court that the search of her purse was unreasonable because it violated the 4th Amendment (protection against unreasonable search and seizure).

Vermonia School district v. Acton was a Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of random drug testing regimen implemented by the local public schools in Vermonia, Oregon. Students athletes were required to submit to random drug testing before participating in sports activities. Some students complained that the random searched violated the 4th Amendment.

In both cases, the Supreme Court ruled the the schools had the right to conduct the searches. Schools administrators don't need to have a search warrant or probable cause to conduct a search because students have a reduced expectation of privacy in schools. The searches conducted at schools were so called 'special needs' cases done to prevent crime, therefore reasonable. School's disciplinary authority outweighs constitutional protection because administrators need to be able to maintain order within the school.
