they get their name conflict minerals because they are sourced from mines that "financed horrific civil conflict in the democratic republic of the Congo and nearby countries.

Conflict minerals, like conflict coltan, got their names based on the fact they were one of the main reasons different groups fought for control of the lands in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Different warlods and even other countries got benefit from mining and local population was badly affected by the working conditions at the mines.

    Explanation:

Conflict minierals are called that way because they were one of the main reasons that encouraged warchiefs in the Congo, and other countries which illegally entered the country such as Rwanda, to fight for the control of the lands, particulary the mines. It basically boosted a black market where conflict coltan and the other minerals were traded which gave more power to the different warlords who could afford their military expenses through exploiting the Congolese civilians who were forced to work under terrible conditions causing the death of many of the miners.
