The oldest continually occupied European settlement in continental North America was Saint Augustine, in current Florida. It was founded by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on September 8, 1565. August 28 was the day the explorers first sighted land in Florida, the day of Saint Augustine, from where it took its name.
