The spread of Buddhism in the northern Chinese "barbarian" courts provided legitimacy by espousing another option for philosophy that could counter criticisms of the Han Chinese who favored classical learning. A big part of north China was dominated by the Xianbei tribe. Buddhist monks became advisers to the rulers of these barbarian tribes. Buddhist monks also got a big support from the rulers of various barbarian states.
