Complete the following paragraph about the revolutions in Latin America. After Latin American nations won independence, US president (James Monroe, George Washington) issued a warning to European countries. He told European countries that they (may, may not attempt) to take back the colonies that they had once owned.

    President Monroe delivered a speech to Congress on December 2, 1823, whose message what was going to be known as the Monroe Doctrine, a major tenet of American foreign policy since then. He said European powers should not interfere in the affairs of the newly independent Latin American countries or in potential US territories. American particularly feared that France or Spain would try to reassert colonial rule over Latin Americans. The doctrine has been embodied by one phrase: "America for Americans."
