A result of the attempted coup against the Soviet government in 1991 was that Soviet states began to declare independence.

On August 18, 1991, radical members of the Communist government and some military began a coup against Mikhail Gorbachev and demanded his resignation. Three days after the first movement, the coup against him collapsed. The consequences of the incident were that soon the Soviet Union would collapse and many states began to declare independence.

The correct answer is B. The Soviet states began to declare independence. But as early as January 1990, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union agreed to renounce its status as a single party and 15 republics constituting the USSR held their first free elections. But only six of the 15 obtained the majority. After the coup, nations such as Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, South Ossetia and of course Russia became independent.
