The new Bessemer process meant that steel could be made at a reasonable cost. Steel rails soon replaced rigid iron ones (I don't typically like using the word "ones" but it's in the book.) Builders had a new tool: a strong, versatile metal. Steel became the foundation for America's astounding industrial growth.
