The two events would be the falling of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989 and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The falling of communism in Eastern Europe can be credited to several different events. The most significant one was the falling of the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was created in the 1960's to separate Berlin into two different parts, East and West Berlin. East Berlin was controlled by the Soviet Union and West Berlin was controlled by Allied forces like the US. This wall became symbolic of the Cold War. In 1989, citizens of Germany started to tear down the wall, as the members of East Berlin were trying to gain rights/freedoms that West Berlin had for decades.

Shortly thereafter, the Soviet Union officially collapsed. Due to several different factors (economic, citizen unrest), the Soviet Union officially dissolved. Gorbachev, the leader of the Soviet Union, resigned and left control to Boris Yeltsin who became the leader of the newly independent Russian country.
