On Washington's farewell address on 1796 the president expresses his maxim regarding foreign nations and American relations with them. AS interest where different and achieving mutual benefit would be a tough business there was no meaning on creating ties that would lead nowhere and might compromise or even jeopardize the American nation on an enterprise they had no interest in participating. He believed the US was still a growing nation that couldn't afford to get on war and he considers they had the power to remain independent or foreign alliances that would take them to a war they weren't willing to fight.

To George Washington, Europe was involved in a lot of controversies due to their primary interests that had no connection to the United States. For that reason, he thought distancing themselves from their friendships and enminities was a wise decision and allowed the country to pursue a different course and their own interests.
