A privateer is a private individual or ship that engages in warfare and sides with a particular nation who pays for its military services.

Privateers have been operating ever since the first voyage to America, with Cristopher Columbus. Subsequent expeditions led by thrid party sailors were funded by several monarchies. These were agreements that suited these privateers's personal interests, as well as those of the crown's that sent them.

It was a matter of assigning resoources adequately, as Europe was still a territory were numerous wars were being fought and it was not profitable to send military personal on these expeditions.
