Why was Iwo Jima an important strategic location for the United States campaign in the Pacific?

    Iwo Jima was strategically important: it provided an air base for fighter japanese planes to intercept B-29 Superfortress long distance bombers and provided a haven for Japanese naval units who needed any assistance.
