Mikhail Gorbachev became the popular political leader after the fall of the Soviet Union.

An unsuccessful coup by Communist Party hard-liners in August 1991 sealed the Soviet Union's fate. led by Boris Yeltsin, he lowered Gorbachev's power and pushed forward democratic powers, to the leading position of Russian politics. On December 25, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the USSR.
