    When the impeachment neared the end, 30 of the 54 senators were in favor of recognition of guilt president. Twelve supported Johnson, and the rest were undecided. At the last moment the five undecided decided to endorse the request of the prosecution, therefore, to vote lacked one vote. May 7 announced a four-day break in the session, during which he took a sharp propaganda in the press. May 11 four undecided senators indicated that they will vote for acquittal, and five days later they were joined by two. This meant that the only senator remained undecided Edmund G. Ross of Kansas. May 16, 1868 held a vote on the proposal, during which Senator Ross acknowledged President innocent, so that to vote lacked one vote. Prosecutors tried to repeat the vote on May 26, but the result was the same - 35 for impeachment, and 19 against
