    D. Iran

Iranian students stormed the U. S. embassy in Tehran, the capital of Iran, and captured U. S. government officials in 1979. The United States and President Jimmy Carter's administration supported the Shah of Iran who was trying to defend his country from Ayatollah Khomeini who was anti-American and was trying to overthrow the Shah. The Shah then received aid from the U. S. when he had cancer and was allowed to enter the U. S. for treatment. This was the last straw for Ayatollah and this was the reason American embassy officials were held captive. This event also caused President Carter's popularity ratings to plummet and led to his loss of the 1980 presidential election.
