    The Vietnam war was the major engagement by US military forces after the end of WWII. In the second half of the 1960s, there were over half a million American troops deployed to fight against a Communist insurgency in South Vietnam, a US ally. Many young men were dying or getting injured. As casualties mounted, more soldiers and civilians became distrutful of official explanations about the war and its objectives. More and more people at home wanted to know when the US involvement would end and when it would be over. The conflict was too long. Dramatic news reports fed opposition to the war effort.
