The first explorer to route the straits off the tip of South America as the way to the east was Ferdinand Magellan.

    Explanation:

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese navigator who was noted for having organized the first circumnavigation voyage to the globe from 1519 to 1522.

In the service of the king of Spain, he planned and commanded the maritime expedition that made the first circumnavigation voyage to the globe. He was the first to reach Tierra del Fuego on the southern tip of the Americas, to cross the strait that bears his name today and to cross the Pacific Ocean he named.
