    Ibn Battuta was a Muslim Moroccan scholar and explorer who travelled across the known world in midieval times for a period of thirty years. His forst aim was to visit the Mecca but he actually visited most of the Islamic world and many non-Muslim lands. Walata, Timbuktu and Gao are among the cities he visited along the Niger river. He dictated an autobiography, titled A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling.
