    Cecil Rhodes was an imperialist who believed that if the British empire extended it's dominion, the world would be a better place. In Africa particularly he had a desire to construct a railway from Cape to Cairo. This would be a means of expanding the British Empire in Africa, which was his ultimate goal. For this reason, he boldly stated his desire for the map of Africa to be painted as "British red as possible."
