During the Reconstruction and the immediate years after that, the Republicans held a lot of power. Starting from Ulysses S. Grant, the next 3 presidents were all Republicans. After that, there was only one Democrat President (Grover Cleveland), who served for 8 years (non-consecutively) before being replaced by 3 more Republicans. Also, Democrat Andrew Johnson's term, Republicans dominated Congress. The period of dominance for Republicans began with the term of Abraham Lincoln in 1861, all the way until the end of William H. Taft's term in 1913.
