In December, 1937 the Japanese invaded the Chinese city of Nanjing and murdered an estimated 200,000 civilians. Leading up to World War II, the Japanese were creating an empire in East Asia and the Pacific believing themselves to be the dominant race and nation of Asia. This is due to the fact that they had not lost to a foreign military power going back to the 1200's against the Mongols. They also expanded because they were a industrious mountain-island nation that needed raw materials for its factories. The Japanese invaded China and annexed nearly have of the Chinese mainland. In a dark moment of history, they invaded the Chinese city of Nanjing and murdered men, women, and children alike while committing various war crimes and atrocities during battle. The League of Nations failed to respond to the incident and was altogether denounced.
