How is Tybalt able to kill Mercutio so easily? Tybalt is a far-better swordsman; Mercutio was all talk. Mercutio was arguing with Romeo. Romeo is holding Mercutio's arm. Tybalt struck with Mercutio's back to him.

    The main reason was probably the fact that Tybalt struck with Mercutio's back to him. The thing was that Romeo wanted to break up the fight between the two but only got in the way which ended with Mercutio's death.
