Thomas Jefferson believed in the powerful motivational role of art. For him, art could inspire the public to seek education, it could elicit social change, and it could foster a sense of enlightenment among the American public. Just as skilled orator can captivate an audience, architecture could fulfill those aspirations, he thought.
