Henry Cabot Lodge responded to the end of World War I by opposing the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations. Cabot wanted Congress to control the declarations of war for the United States and since Woodrow Wilson then refused and blocked this move to ratify the Treaty of Versailles with reservations, the United States never joined the League of Nations.
