How did Imperialism contribute to World War I? The competition for colonies created mistrust among European nations. European nations joined alliances to conquer territory in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Propaganda from the colonial empires increased the calls for war.

    Imperialism was one of the MAIN causes of the First World War. The great powers of the time (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary and Russia) competed to have more territory, to have more colonies. This situation created mistrust among these European nations.
